Chardham Yatra-The Sanctified Pilgrimage of Hindus

Uttarakhand, the dev-bhumi (land of god) perhaps draws the largest chunk of pilgrims in India. Blessed with lofty mountains, green hills and gushing rivers, Uttarakhand has a divine charm and out of the innumerable pilgrimage sights of the Hindus strewn all over the state the Chardham is the most sought after circuit. Char Dham in general refers to the four Hindu religious sites in Uttarakhand that covers Yamunotri Temple, Gangotri Temple, Badrinath Temple and Kedarnath Temple in one go. Needless to mention that the panoramic landscapes stemming from the majestic Himalayas proves a godly presence and the tranquility of the valley at its foothills is undoubtedly an ideal location for meditating both religion and nature. The pilgrimage covering these four special spots is called the Chardham yatra which is traditionally is undertaken from Yamunotri in the west to Badrinath in the east.

The eternal bliss of the mountains no wonder heal one from his soul’s burden and the religious significance of these four spots makes the human quest for salvation a wonderful experience altogether. The popularity of the place each year brings lakhs of devotees not only for the length and breadth of the country but from all over the world and in the first place the hustle bustle in all the dhams do not go with the concept of serenity and meditation. But, the probably the charm of a pilgrimage lies in sharing the journey. Thus, the whole process takes the shape of a great Indian festival. The only difference is that we find god in the end. And most of the pilgrims even find the true meaning of life during this holy journey.

The tranquility of the valley is often rippled by the holy chants laced with ghastly wind and clinking bells and when they come back reverberating through the verdant valley and snow capped mountains it touches one’s soul. Besides, nothing feels holier than the nature itself. Discovering nature in its purest form is in itself an achievement. The Mighty Ganges flowing past this blessed land is indeed the epitome of God’s graces and they say a dip in the Ganges can magically rub off one of his sins. No wonder, the Gangotri dham named after the Goddess Ganga is the ideal spot for seeking salvation. Similarly, Yamunotri named after another holy river Yamuna is another Hindu pilgrimage site. On the other hand, people climb up to Kedarnath in order to find Lord Shiva in his abode while Badrinath is believed to be the dwelling of Lord Vishnu.

The ideal time to go searching for peace and god at the Himalayas is from May to October. Although, the pilgrims never mind the physical tribulations but most of the time they avoid monsoons due to road blockages and landslides. Heavy snowfall season is also avoided because the roads become inaccessible due to snow. Interestingly, during these difficult seasons, the idols are shifted to nearby pilgrim points in order to continue the holy visits.  One can also visit one single spot and skip the rest but if time permits it is advisable to complete the whole circuit because each one of them has its own charm and significance.

Nainital Hill Station,Uttaranchal, India

At 1938 metres in the Kumaon Hill, this attractive hill station was once the summer capital of Uttaranchal. The hotels and villas of this popular resort are set around the peaceful Naini Lake or Tal, hence the name.

Nainital is very much pleasant and a green hill station, that immediately attracted to the homesick Brits, who were prompted of the Cumbria Lake District.  It was ascertained by a Mr Barron and he had his yacht contained here in 1840. The Naini Tal Boat Club, whose wooden clubhouse still adorns the edge of the lake, became the stylish focus of the community. Disaster struck on 16 September 1880 when a major landslip occurred, burying 151 people in the Assembly Halls area and creating the recreation ground now known as the Flats.

This is surely one of the most pleasant hill stations to visit and there are many interesting walks and trekking areas through the forests to points with awesome views of the Himalaya.

Orientation & Information

In Nainital there are two main markets (bazaars), Tallital and Mallital, are at either end of the lake, connected by the Mall Road. A toll keeps most motorised traffic of this road during the high season.

Naini Lake
Nainital Lake

The attractive lake is said to be one of the emerald green eyes of Siva’s wife, Sati. She had jumped into a sacrificial bonfire and as her mourning husband drugged her charred remains across the country, various appendages dropped off. India is now cluttered with places ‘organized’ by parts of her body. Her eye falling here makes this a holy spot and the popular Naina Devi Temple is by the northern end of the lake. Nearby is a small Tibetan market.

You can rent rowing boats and pedal boats for around 125 Rs. Per hour from a number of places along the Mall. The Nainital Boat Club has a few yachts for Rs 250per hour and you may be able to perusable them to waive the temporary membership Rs. 1500 for 3 day with taking any facility of club hose (bar, restaurant, ball room and library).

St John’s Church

Built in 1847, soon after the British arrived this church contains a brass memorial to the victims of the famous landslip. The few bodies that could be uncovered form the rubble were buried in the graveyard here.

Snow View Nainital

A ropeway takes up to this popular viewpoint at 2270 metres. The lift is open from 10am to 4 pm and costs Rs. 60-/ one way. It’s a pleasant walk down past the Tibetan gompa. The Rs. 30 return ticket gives you only one hour at the top and a set time for your return. A sign says ‘don’t be panicy in case of power failure’.

At the top there are powerful binoculars (Rs.10) for a close-up view of Nanda Devi (7817metres)

Treks

There are several good trekking spots, with views of the snow capped mountains to the north. China Peak, also known as Naini Peak is the highest point in the area (2610 meters) and can be reached either from Snow View or from Mallital (six km.). Climb up early in the morning when the views are clearer.

A four km walk to the west of the lake brings you to Dorothy’s Seat (2292meters) where a Mr Kellet built a seat in memory of his wife, killed in plane crash.  Laria Kanta is a peak at 2480 metres on the opposite side of the lake and Deopatta (2435 metres) is west of Mallital.

Hanumangarh

There are awesome views and outstanding sunsets over the plains from this Hanuman temple, three km south of Tallital. Just over on km further on is the state observatory, which is sometimes open at weekends.

Places to Stay at Nainital

There are over 200 places to stay. Off season rates are given here but you may be able to get a further discount. Its worth paying a bit more for a room with a view over the lake and you often get a better deal for a more expensive room in a cheaper hotel, then for a cheap room in an upmarket place.

Wildlife at Jim Corbett National Park

Needless to mention, this particular stretch of land holds a special place in Indian green belt and is one of the world’s most eco-friendly destinations. Known to the world as Jim Corbett National Park, this place is the refuge of a large wildlife index. Because of the fact that India’s most ambitious wildlife conservation initiative was kicked off from this oldest national park in the country it is probably the most celebrated wildlife reserve in the country. Situated at the foothills of the Himalayas in the state of Uttarakhand, this park was once established as Hailey National Park in the year 1936.
Breath taking Himalayan topography around the park makes it a favorite destination of nature lovers and this amalgamation of lofty mountains, green meadows and gushing rivers covering an area of total 522 kilometers is in itself a wonder. Since, the park ensures a safe and sound habitat for the existing wildlife inside, it is a heaven for the record number of Indian flora and fauna. The wildlife crown at Corbett National Park comprises of about 50 mammal species, 580 bird species, 25 reptile species and 110 tree species. But, it has always been an abode of the tigers. The star of the jungles, a Royal Bengal tiger is a visual treat to wildlife lovers. Thanks to the wildlife conservation initiative called Project Tigers, the park is home to the largest number of tigers in the country. However, a tiger spotting at Corbett is a difficult task which requires both patience and good luck. A ruffle behind the green bushes and there you spot the most enchanting creation which combines both beauty and horror in a perfect way.
Jim Corbett National Park is also popular among wildlife enthusiasts for numbers of other ‘wild’ reasons which goes on like- Elephants, Leopards, Himalayan Black Bears, Hedgehogs, Flying Foxes and Indian pangolins. Sloth Bear, Jungle Cat, Fishing Cat, Himalayan Black Bear, Dole or Wild Dog, Jackal, Himalayan Palm Civet, Indian Gray Mongoose, Common Otter, Goat Antelopes, Languor’s, Indian Gray Mongoose and fish-eating Crocodiles. Thus, Corbett has much more to its charm than the tigers. A jeep safari in Corbett or an elephant safari in Corbett provides a good opportunity to have an eye contact with this amazing assortment of god’s best creations. Apart from this, a rich avian population of about 600 bird species in Corbett National Park adorns the place and makes bird spotting a unique experience.
A flock of migratory birds flying in to the Corbett sky at dusk is a sight to behold and the green jungle gradually disappearing into a thick blanket of darkness is not a sight but a phenomenon at this wonderland. Holding one’s breath for a second and trying to listen to the music of the jungles reminds only one thing-if anything on this earth is ever pure than it has to be the nature. The cacophony of the wildlife around itself transforms into sweet Jazz to the ears and one’s soul leaps into a dance in the wilderness.
And if these are not enough sweet sounding reasons to lure you into these greens, then may be you have forgotten how to celebrate life and its simple offerings. Wouldn’t it be a nice to let Corbett break that monotony? Let the nature once again be a cure to your stonned soul simply at Corbett. You just need to land up here leaving the rest of the things happen on its own. This is how nature operates.

Carnivalesque Camping by the Ganges

Finding a green, serene and exotic location near Rishikesh is not a big task since the whole region is nestled in the best of the Himalayan trail. But, it becomes difficult to choose one from the myriad of such beautiful locations strewn all over the holy city of Rishikesh. Our brains went through this painful exercise once we reached this city of senses. The purpose was to relish the great religious fervor centered on the city of Rishikesh`. God forbid us from skipping such sacred places in the beautiful stretches of the Himalaya. But, secretly, we were contemplating a great river rafting exercise in Ganges. That would have meant our sacred dip at the holy Ganges! Thus, began our search for a perfect rafting in Shivpuri and camping location and finally we zeroed on a beautiful camp site near Shivpuri with a spectacular river bank to compliment the style of the arrangements.
The white sand upon the bank resembled that of a beach and the atmosphere around was no different from a beach side carnival. The sand that shone like gold when we arrived soon changed color like a chameleon and the beach looked like a sheet of silver as soon as the moon appeared at the horizon. The green hills no longer looked green and the darkness outlining those majestic hills gradually descended upon this well maintained camp site. But, the evening was lit up with a warm bonfire and never for a second did we curse the lanterns by our bed sides. At times, the absence of electricity can be welcoming too! There was no dearth of things we required for that special night by the Ganges -food, music and warm hospitality! A bunch of friendly fellow campers to our company the camp felt like a comfortable party. This was just because, almost by 13 kilometers upstream from Rishikesh on the road to Deoprayag, there we found our route to salvation. An ideal stress busting exercise we would like to call it.
But, do we need to mention how romantic it is to stare at the sky and hear the sound of the mighty Ganges in a moonlit night? You will understand it better when we tell you how we spent the rest of the night- clean Alpine tents with roll up windows and warm blankets to beat away the river side chill.  But, we couldn’t sleep away that exciting night as a completely new experience awaited us in the violent rapids of the river nearby.  It’s not that we are born adventurers but what’s the harm in trying out a mild rapid like Sweet Sixteen (Grade-1)?
But, till we encountered the rapids, River Rafting Rishkesh and the camps offered us an ultimate opportunity to go private with nature at its best. Our best camp site treat was the beach volley ball game we that we enthusiastically took part at but saluting the game spirit we never cried on our defeat. We won in any way because nothing can go wrong at such a beautiful place. The only thing that vanquished was our tempered bodies and souls! And to a certain extent our fear of the wild, untamed rivers! Some rejuvenation amidst the Himalayas was necessary and the camping happened just in right time. Right here at Shivpuri!
